Streetworker Program

Program Type:

The Streetworkers Program operates 24 hours a day on the streets and in the high schools. Streetworker work 9-5 during school year and 12-9 during summer months (while being on call 24 hours a day), staff conduct gang and youth outreach activities engaging gang members in the streets and through home visits. The streetworkers advocate for gang members in the courts (when appropriate), help the probation department with supervision, mediate disputes and gang truces, and refer gang members and their families to existing government and community programs. Streetworkers also have played a critical role in Operation Ceasefire (see website links) inviting gang members to meetings (forums) with Federal, State, and local law enforcement agencies to communicate a message of zero tolerance for firearm homicides.

Goal:

To bring the juvenile homicide rate to zero. Maintaining the zero juvenile homicides and building a repot with the gang involved youth to stop violent recidivism.

Target Population:

High-risk youth and young adults, especially those not currently receiving services, those who been in juvenile hall, youth ranches and California Youth Authority for weapons charges.

Setting:

High-risk neighborhoods in the San Francisco Bay Area.
